Foundry Town Kuwana
KuwanaCity is the 42nd post town on the 53 stations Tokaido, counting from Nihonbashi.
``Kwana casting'' was first developed in 1986 when Honda Tadakatsu, one of the four kings of Tokugawa, became the first lord of the Kuwana domain in Ise Province with a 100,000 koku estate. It is said that production has begun.
It is said that during the Edo period, there were three ``Onimoji'' in Kuwana who were licensed by the imperial court to manufacture castings, and ``Those who were too old in Seishu Kuwana were copper torii gates...'' The cast bronze torii gate of Kasuga Shrine (KuwanaCity), which is said to have been sung in a folk song, is approximately 7 meters high and 6 meters wide, and its majestic appearance is said to have astounded travelers.

Introducing a little bit about the experience! Try making coasters!
*Slide the image to understand the work process.
This time, I decided to try ② making coasters.
The experience took about 2 hours, but it went by in a blink of an eye if I was concentrating!
I would like to introduce a little bit of what I experienced♪
① Design selection
First, choose a design!
I chose a “gear” design!
② Sand filling
To create a mold for pouring the tin, use a shovel to roughly sprinkle fine sand over the selected parts.
③Harden the sand
Once it's filled to the brim, use a tool to press down on the sand to firm it up.
④Make the mold
After repeating step ③ several times, turn it over and take out the parts...you'll see a very beautiful shaped mark!
⑤Pour the tin
On top of this, a frame with holes drilled into it to harden the tin and pour it in is placed over it.
Now it's time to pour the hot tin♪
This work is dangerous and should be done by professional staff.
⑥Coaster is completed
Wait for about 5 minutes and remove the sand around it...a beautiful silver coaster will be completed♪
You can take the finished product home as is, or carefully sand it to make it smooth, so you can make your own original coaster!
The process I experienced was actually the method used to make castings in the past!
It was a valuable experience to be able to make a miniature version of an authentic casting.
We want to preserve the culture of “Kwana Casting” through industrial tourism!
The number of people involved in Kuwana casting, which has a 400-year history dating back to the gun manufacturing of Tadakatsu Honda, the first lord of the Kuwana domain, is decreasing.
Taiyo Sangyo, which has been making water supply materials from castings in KuwanaCity for over 60 years, has opened Caster Home as a place where you can easily experience casting, with the desire to preserve that culture.
Through Caster Home, we are helping to revitalize the local culture by promoting industrial tourism such as visiting Kuwana to experience casting and learn about Kuwana Casting.
I hope that this experience will help spread the appeal of the traditional industry of ``Kwana Casting'' and help it continue to exist!
