``Mushi Okuri'' is a method of exterminating pests in modern rice cultivation, and was actually carried out in the Maruyama area until 1951.
In the past, there were no pesticides and there was nothing they could do about pests, so local children gathered together, received amulets from temples, and paraded through the Senmaida rice fields with torches, drums, and bells in their hands, creating fire and sound. It was driving away pests.
This event embodies the farmers' simple prayers to harvest as many grains of rice as possible.

Nowadays, it has been revived as an agricultural event since 2004, when the Kumano Kodo was recognized as a World Heritage Site, and in the evening the Senmaida fields are lit with torches, creating a fantastical scenery.
At night, they parade through the ridges of the Senmaida rice fields with drums and torches.
