What is the meaning of New Year's Eve bell?

New Year's Eve (Omisoka) on December 31st, which marks the end of the year, is called Jojitsu.

The word "jo" in Jōnichi has the meaning of "throw away the old and welcome the new," and Jōnichi is the day when the old year is thrown away and the new one is welcomed.

The temple bell that is rung from the night of New Year's Eve until the beginning of the new year is called "Joya no Kane," and it is common for the bell to be rung 108 times, but recently there are some places where people can ring the bell regardless of the number of times they wish. is.

Why is the New Year's Eve bell rung 108 times?

A person's earthly desires refer to desires, anger, complaints, etc. that trouble the body and mind, and it is said that each person has 108 of them.

The reason why New Year's bells are rung 108 times on New Year's Eve is that each time the bell is rung, one by one, the worldly desires will be erased and the wish for happiness will be felt in the new year.

What time does the New Year's Eve bell start?

Joya-no-Kane is run until midnight from New Year's Eve to New Year's Day.
