Hitoboshi

Date: August 15th to 16th every year

It is a traditional event in which a light is held up to welcome the first spirits and an instrument called a ``jajatsuku'' is used to announce the beginning of the Bon dance, followed by a memorial service for the first spirits. This traditional event has been designated as an intangible folk cultural property (designated by the city).

☆Jajatsuk
``Jajatsuk'' is a musical instrument consisting of a bell and a large drum. When the performer holds a two-pronged baton called shamata in his right hand and strikes the jajatsuku, the bell and drum start ringing simultaneously, making a sound like an accompaniment.
In his left hand is an inner stick called a shumoku, which occasionally rings a bell or drum to tighten the rhythm and create a unique atmosphere. It is said that it was actively held at Soto sect temples in the Kumano region at the end of the Edo period, but today it is only held at Kofukuji Temple.

☆Fire and Boshi
Candles are lit on 108 green bamboos from the first spirit's house to the cemetery. This is a signpost for sending the first spirit home and has the meaning of a light that burns away 108 earthly desires.
