The rock walls have been eroded by the erosive action of the Kuroshio Current, creating a tunnel-like structure. It was designated as a natural monument by the prefecture in February 1978 as the ``Shimakatsu Sea Cave''.

You can see the sunrise coming out of the cave for 3 to 4 days before and after the vernal and autumnal equinoxes, but it is rare to be able to see the sunrise shining through the cave, unobstructed by clouds or fog. .
The best view of the cave is from near Nakaguma Elementary School.
