The Shibunashigaya tree at Kagoji Temple is located in the northeast corner of the temple grounds, and is about 20 meters tall, growing well and producing a large amount of fruit every year.
Shibunashigaya is a variety of Kaya, and is characterized by the fact that the skin attached to the endosperm of the seeds is easy to remove, and there is none at all.
As far back as the Edo period, many Kaya trees were planted in the Iga region in order to obtain Kaya oil, the best cooking oil.
The fruit itself was also edible, and it is said that in Iga and Kiso, a confectionery called ``Kaya Arare'' was made by sprinkling it with sugar.
The seeds are often used in Chinese medicine as Hijitsu, and the Kaya tree itself is also famous as a high-quality material and is used for things such as shogi boards.
It was designated as a national natural monument on July 25, 1932 (S7).
It has also been designated as one of the top 100 trees in Mie.
