pearl road

Pearl Road is a 23.8km driveway that connects Toba and Shima, and there are many observation decks and places to enjoy gourmet food along the way.

There are many places with open views, so you'll be impressed by the view of the ocean that stretches out in front of you.

There is a point where you can see the ocean while driving Fugamaru, so it is very popular as a driving spot in the Kinki (Kansai) and Tokai regions!

ChamUntil 2006, it was a toll road, but now it can be used for free.

There are a number of unnamed observation decks on Pearl Road, and each one has a few parking spaces, so you can stop by casually.

For more information on Pearl Road, please see the article below.

In this article, we will introduce recommended observation decks and hidden gems along Pearl Road, so please read until the end.

TobaObservatory

TobaObservatory is an observation deck located on Pearl Road, and is a spectacular spot where you can see the ocean from an altitude of 163 meters!

There is a parking lot for about 250 cars, and there are separate toilets for men and women, so it's a great place to take a break.

FugamaruTobaObservatory is also known as the place where you can see Mt. Fuji. In my experience, the weather is easy to see clear skies in winter.

Hakodayamaenchi, located just a short walk from the parking lot, is also a spot you can't miss!

From the two-story wooden deck here, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the ocean from a higher perspective.

The Sea Museum is a museum located along Pearl Road.

It has a collection of folklore materials related to the sea, such as ama divers, fishing, and wooden boats, with a whopping 60,000 items on display!

Of the 60,000 itemsin Fugamaru, 6,879 items are nationally designated important tangible cultural properties, so there is plenty to see.

The sight of more than 80 wooden boats from all over the country lined up in a row is a sight to behold.

Modern fishing boats are plastic boats equipped with engines, but until just 50 years ago, wooden boats were the mainstream.

At the cafe in the Chamufacility, you can enjoy gourmet dishes made with local seafood, such as seafood oyster curry and whitebait carbonara from Toshi Island.

Little-known tourist spots

We will introduce some hidden spots in TobaCity where you can enjoy beautiful scenery.

We have carefully selected the recommended places for those who want to enjoy themselves without the crowds.

Interesting observation deck

Omoshiro Observatory is an observation deck located on Pearl Road, and as its name suggests, it is called ``Omoshiro Observatory''.

We have collected over 240 reviews on Google, and it seems that many people come here because they are curious about the name "Interesting".

This is the view from the observatory, and you can see the panoramic view of TobaCity 's Adako-osatsu, Ousatsu-cho, and the Pacific Ocean.

It's worth a visit, as you can get a close-up view of the ria coastline, where the sea and islands spread out.

There is also a Fugamaruparking lot and toilet, so it is a recommended rest spot on Pearl Road.

It is located in a location overlooking Matoya Bay, where oyster farming is popular, and can be accessed via Pearl Road.

There is a ``Tokotowa Bell'' at the Harusame Observation Deck, and it is said that a couple who rings this bell will be in love forever.

I think it's a perfect location for a date, as you can enjoy a panoramic view of the ocean while ringing theChamu bell.

You can also see the beautifulFugamaru-yaki, so why not end your trip to Toba?

You can't go inside the lighthouse, but the area around it has a great ocean view overlooking the Pacific Ocean!

It's a little-known spot, so you can relax and watch the ocean while listening to the sound of the waves.

I think you can refresh your mind and body by taking a leisurely walk while looking out at theocean here.

Spectacular scenic spots on remote islands

We will introduce some spectacular scenic spots on remote islands that you can visit by riding TobaCity liner that departs from Toba Marine Terminal.

Tenbozan Rayfield (Toshijima)

Tenbozan Rayfield is a scenic spot that you must visit when you come to Toshijima!

From the wooden deck installed on the high ground of Mt.Tembozan, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Toba Bay and the great nature of Toshijima Island.

The wooden deck is photogenic, so why not take a commemorative photo here?

Tenbozan Rayfield can be reached by passing through the Toshijima Skyline, a road that connects Wagu Port on Toshijima to Momotori Port.

There are gentle slopes along the way, and it's about a 30-minute walk from Wagu Port to Mt. Tenbo Rayfield, so it's a scenic spot that you can enjoy as if you were hiking.

Please note that there are some areas where the footing leading to the observation deck may be unstable, so it is best to wear sneakers or other comfortable shoes.

In addition, there are other scenic spots on Toshijima where you can see the beautiful ocean.

There are also restaurants where you can enjoy delicious gourmet food made with ingredients from Toshijima, so please see the article below for more information.

Karst terrain (Kamishima)

Kamishima 's karst topography is a spectacular spot where you can feel an exotic feeling!

It is a topography created by weathering and erosion of limestone, and has been designated as a designated natural monument by TobaCity.

The scenery of the quay that riseslike a white tower and the blue sea is a beauty of nature.

There is a promenade that takes you close to the Chamuquay, and you can even touch the rocks.

Kamishima is the setting for Yukio Mishima's novel ``Shiosai,'' and there are many locations on the island that were used as filming locations for the movie ``Shiosai.''

The photo above shows the remains of a guard post built during the war, and was the location where a famous scene from the movie "Shiosai" was filmed.

In addition to the beautiful scenery and touring filming locations, the highlights of Kamishima are not to be missed: the delicious food served at the accommodation ``Sankaiso.''

The photo above is a dinner plan for 15,000 yen (excluding tax) that includes 1 night and 2 meals, and you can enjoy a luxurious boat platter and plenty of boiled fish and side dishes.

The appeal of Sankaiso is that it adheres to the founder's philosophy of ``We only serve food that is caught in the waters around Kamishima to our customers,'' and that you can enjoy the charm of Kamishima through its cuisine.

This amount of Fugamaruis enough for one person. I was able to enjoy the ingredients of Kamishima to my heart’s content 🎵

Please see the article below for the charm of Kamishima and the accommodation report of Sankaiso.

Shirongo Beach (Sugashima)

Shirongo Beach in Sugashima is a beach with white sand and blue sea, and is located about a 30-minute walk from the regular ferry terminal at Sugashima Port.

The beautiful colors of the sea make you feel like you are at an overseas resort, and it is a spectacular view that can only be seen on a remote island.

Fugamaru Ihave been to many beaches around Mie Prefecture, and I think Shirongo Beach's transparency is among the best in the prefecture.

The promenade leading to Shirongo Beach is called "Shirongo Kaido," and there are many views along the way where you can enjoy the beautiful sea.

The photo above is of the railroad tracks just after entering Shirongo Kaido Road, and I couldn't help but snap the shutter at the sight, which looked like something out of a certain Ghibli movie.

When I asked an islander who happened to be passing by, I learned that this was a railroad track used to unload ships.

When you come to Sugashima, the gourmet food you must try is the bento box from Okageya.

The photo above is the "SHIMA bento" ¥1,000 (excluding tax), which has a variety of side dishes that make use of seasonal ingredients, such as boiled and fried dishes!

When I visited in March, what was in the SHIMA bento was:

・Sugashima octopus tempura
・Seared Sawara from Sugashima
・Simmered seaweed stems from Sugashima
・Okageya's special seaweed tsukudani
・Iga rice rice
・Dashi roll with seaweed from Sugashima
・Homemade boiled abalone
・Fried flounder caught in nearby waters
・Fly fish caught in nearby waters
・Dried fish from Ise region's famous "Same no Tare"
・Deli dishes made with vegetables grown in the fields of Sugashima
・Skewer-grilled turban shells from Sugashima

It was a locally produced and locally consumed bento packed with plenty of ingredients from Sugashima and Mie Prefecture.

Okageya's bento boxes are available by reservation and can be made by calling (0599-34-2525) at least two days in advance of pick-up.

FugamaruOkage-ya is located a few minutes walk from the ferry terminal.

It was a nice service that they wrapped the Chamu in a carrier bag so that it was easy to carry around.

The following article introduces a model day itinerary where you can fully enjoy the charms of Sugashima.

Sakate Beach (Sakate Island)

Sakate Beach is a sandy beach at the eastern end of Sakate Island, about a 10-minute walk from the regular ferry terminal at Sakate Port.

You can enjoy swimming in the beach as it has continuous shallow water, but it is also a spectacular spot where you can see the crystal clear sea.

When I visited, it was so clear that I could see the fish swimming in it, and the emerald green sea surface was as beautiful as a jewel.

The waves are calm, so strolling along the shore will soothe you with the soothing sea breeze and sound of the waves.

There is a covered table deck near theFugamaru beach, so you can relax while looking out at the sea 🎵

The village on the island is the birthplace of EdogawaRanpo 's wife, Takashi Murayama, and is also a famous place called ``Takashi's Birthplace.''

This place used to be a general store, and the characteristic pink walls still retain traces of those days.

ChamuSakate Island is also known as a place of pilgrimage for novel fans as there is a site associated with EdogawaRanpo Ranpo.

Another appeal of Sakate Island is that you can stroll through the retro townscape ofFugamaru.

The following article provides a detailed explanation of the Sakate Island day trip itinerary.
