According to temple legend, it was founded by Gyoki, and currently belongs to the Toyozan school of the Shingon sect.
The principal image is the secret Buddha, Yakushi Nyorai, and the standing statue of Nikko and Gekko Bodhisattva, the side attendant, is designated as an important cultural property of the country.
The Nikko statue has its left hand bent and its right hand extended to hold a long red treasure mirror, while the Moonlight statue has its right hand bent and its left hand extended to hold a white treasure mirror.
Originally it was painted, but now the base material is exposed and the grain of the wood can be seen.
